Merheim Hospital: Topping-Out Ceremony for New Cardiology Unit

The shell of the new cardiology unit is complete: On May 28, 2018, the cardiology unit of Merheim Hospital in Cologne, Germany, held its topping-out ceremony jointly with its collaborative partner Medtronic, the market leader in the field of medical engineering. The project includes the construction of a new building for intervention, examination and treatment rooms, in addition to offices and conference rooms for doctors and staff. The wards are also being upgraded on three floors. Drees & Sommer is providing project management services and ensuring cost, schedule and quality targets are met. The upgraded areas and the extension are due to be opened in fall 2019.

While the Cologne clinical center’s cardiology, angiology and diabetology clinic has seen strong growth in the past few years, its ageing building technology equipment was preventing the development of the clinic into the future. After completion of the project, better infrastructure, modern hospital equipment and efficient processes will ensure that patients receive even better all-round care, and that staff can enjoy optimal working conditions. Apart from state-of-the-art technology and medical treatment, the main focus is on short ways for patients, medical and nursing personnel.

Patient monitoring will therefore be situated in the new building adjacent to the central patient admissions department, which will be right at the entrance area. The proximity of all doctors involved in interventions will ensure close communication and more efficient processes. Combined with the latest technology, such as wireless communication for patient monitoring, the structural refurbishment of the cardiology wards and the complete renovation of the outpatient clinics will meet the highest of standards.
